1. Expanding Highways: Opportunities and challenges in a COVID-altered world (Feb 9, 2023)

Presentations considered the pros and cons of increasing the capacity of limited access highway networks by building new roads and/or widening/extending them – potentially combined with investments in transportation system management (TSM), transportation demand management (TDM), intelligent transportation systems (ITS), public transit and/or connected vehicle (CV) infrastructure.

3. Replacing Highways: A different approach to transportation planning (Mar 9)

Due to social justice, economic and environmental concerns, some expressways that were built through established urban areas in the 1950s and 1960s are now being removed to free up space for development and people. This webinar discussed several examples where highways were downgraded to arterial status, buried underground or not replaced.

4. Highway $$$: Funding, procurement and financial structures (Mar 23)

Highways can’t be built, expanded, optimized or replaced without significant money. This webinar took a deep dive into the challenges, opportunities and outcomes associated with past, current and future funding, financing and procurement structures — and what they mean for transportation planning in general.

5. Highway Communications: Framing benefits and costs for diverse audiences (Apr 13)

Highway building was seen as a sign of progress in the 20th century with few questions asked of the transportation experts in charge of planning and design. Today, elected officials, government staff and hired consultants must devise communication strategies and messaging that responds to demands for technical information and transparency from the media, business, NGOs, academia and citizens at large. In this webinar, international experts discussed how highway benefits and costs are framed for diverse audiences to gain their support for or against a range of multi-billion dollar construction projects.

6. Highway Construction and Operations: Traditions and innovations (Apr 20)

While highway planning receives most of the public’s attention, there are many details pertaining to construction and operations that go unnoticed – unless something goes wrong. Along with a discussion of supplier contracts and labour issues, this webinar discussed recent public and private sector advances in road standards, transportation systems management, traffic safety and environmental protection as well as innovations that could be implemented in the future.

7. Highway Stakeholders: Diverse perspectives on the future of highways (May 4)

Highway planning has been contentious for a very long time. Is it possible to reach a consensus on whether highway networks should be expanded, optimized and/or replaced? In this webinar, several non-governmental associations discussed how each highway option can positively or negatively address the economic, environmental and social objectives of their respective memberships and whether the same outcomes are true for society at large. Delegate questions and survey responses helped the facilitated discussion.
