To help facilitate a rational discussion about road pricing pros and cons in Ontario, Healthy Transport Consulting joined with the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario (RCCAO) to present the province’s inaugural Transport Futures Forum on November 13, 2008. The learning event featured road pricing experts from Germany, France, Netherlands, the UK, the USA and Canada. Their very different case studies, research and perspectives provided an excellent overview of the benefits of road pricing as well as the challenges that international governments have faced in terms of public acceptance, governance, investment and technical aspects.

Along with several news articles, the 2008 Forum attracted over 130 delegates representing government, business, labour, NGOs and academia. Some of their feedback included these testimonials:

  • “Attendees seemed very engaged — good mix of speakers with different styles.”
  • “Fantastic to have an international perspective — nicely done! Roundtable — what a great idea. I like this ‘candid’ format.”
  • “I had little (road pricing) knowledge so this was a good introduction.”
  • “It provided a dialogue that is very necessary in this generation. I thought it was excellent that government agencies were present to show that pricing initiatives are not solely a lost cause.”
  • “Speakers were knowledgeable and brought a wealth of experience. A valuable contribution to the public debate.”
  • “Very good balance between practical, ground level projects and larger projects.”
  • “Very well organized. Innovative and intriguing topic. Thanks for having me.”

The success of our inaugural Forum has led to 26 more learning events focusing on mobility pricing, infrastructure funding, the future of the car and intercity travel.
