You might not want to pay them and they may not seem fair, but road tolls are being included in discussion about how to fund transit and change driving habits in the GTA. Ontario’s Environmental Commissioner Gord Miller is the latest to suggest road pricing has a range of benefits.
Going beyond simple tolls, road pricing employs various measures to make drivers aware of the costs of roads to manage traffic and subsidize transit.
For instance, a downtown congestion charge similar to one used in London’s financial district or the $1 a day non-residential parking charged to drivers in Vancouver and Chicago are ideas.
